Feeling like my life is out of control
It is easy to get overwhelmed and feel like you are just barely getting by, or potentially even on the verge of a breakdown. Sometimes this lasts for a few hours and sometimes it lasts for weeks, and that feeling is hard to shake. It seems like nothing is going your way and you can’t get anything right. If you have been feeling this for days or weeks, it’s probably a good time to get connected with mental health services online. As an online mental health therapist, I can see you where you want during a time that works for you. And sometimes an easy to attend appointment is the difference between making it to work or crying in the car. Here are some of the starting points for feeling like you are in control of your life.
1. Evaluate the areas that stress you out the most.
Is it the job, the household management, or maybe its relationship stress. Identifying what is potentially the largest cause of chaos and stress will help to problem solve. I would make a list of all the key players in life (job, relationships, friendships, etc.) and give them a rating 1-5 of how stressful that thing is for you and 1-5 of how much satisfaction you find.
2. If step 1 brought out an obvious problem, figure out what the potential fixes might be.
Maybe it’s creating more boundaries with family, maybe it’s looking into new job opportunities, or maybe it’s just accepting that during the routinely difficult week the clothes will stay in the hamper rather than be put away. Problem solve the small things first.
3. Take a look at your habits.
Are you getting the proper amount of sleep, are you eating appropriately, when was the last time you had human contact, have you seen the sun in the past 72 hours? Sometimes the smallest things make a big impact. Problem solve any habits that might need to be changed.
4. Do all of the adult things.
Are you ignoring pain, do you need to get a prescription refilled, are your eyeglasses out of date? Really consider if you have been giving your body the proper upkeep. Getting in touch with a Dr. if you have medical concerns could create a huge change in daily functioning.
5. Get started with virtual mental health therapy services.
Sometimes the problems are too big to face alone. And other times you simply cannot fix it yourself.
